Come in hungry, habibi.

Lebanese home cooking on Bridge Road. The cabinet fills at seven every morning, the wraps are rolled to order, and when the trays empty, that is lunch.

The cook behind the counter

Everything you see was made here this morning.

The cook the reviews keep naming fills the cabinet herself, every weekday, before Richmond is properly awake. Hummus and labneh in the painted bowls, za'atar mana'ish warm off the press, falafel fried in small batches, a soup of the day, and a pot of something slow, fasolia w riz on a good day. When the cabinet empties, lunch is over.

Walk in twice and she remembers you, order and all, and greets you with a hello habibi over the counter, however deep the lunch queue runs. Nothing fancy, nothing styled: generous plates, board prices that make you look twice, and everything down to the doughnuts, custard tarts and baklava-style sweets made on site. Regulars call it one of Richmond's best-kept secrets, then keep telling people anyway.

From the cabinet

The cabinet is the menu

Trays go in at seven, the glass fogs up by noon, and lunch comes straight over the counter. Photographed as served, by the people eating it.

Za'atar wrap opened in its takeaway box with lettuce, tomato, pickles and red onion

Za'atar wrap, boxed

Grilled flatbread with za'atar through the fold, then pickles, tomato, red onion and garlic sauce.

Open za'atar mana'ish loaded with salad, pickles, tomato and garlic sauce before rolling

Mana'ish, loaded

Opened flat and stacked with salad and pickles, a moment before it is rolled shut.

Fasolia, a slow lamb and white bean stew in tomato, served with rice, flatbread and lemon

Fasolia w riz

Slow lamb and white beans in tomato, over rice, lemon on the side. The pot changes with the day.

Even the sweets are made here

Doughnuts, custard tarts, muffins and baklava-style sweets, all out of the same small kitchen, sitting beside the savoury trays until they are gone.

Soup of the day

One pot, ladled until it is empty. Ask at the counter what this morning brought, then trust it.

“Hands down, most wholesome and flavourful food in Melbourne. Nothing fancy, a rustic homey place where Lena cooks proper food”

For a table, ring the counter

The room is small and lunch is the rush, so for a table today the phone is the way in: ask for a table on the call and it is done.

Feeding a crowd? The cabinet was made for trays. Ring with your date and numbers and the kitchen will tell you what it can do.
